Job Overview

The Financial Controller leads the accounting department and ensures the accuracy of all company financials. This role is responsible for maintaining the integrity of project-level data (Work-In-Progress schedules, job costs, and change orders) to support executive decision-making and ensure bonding capacity remains secure.

Key Responsibilities

Job Costing & Project Accounting

  • Manage job cost tracking and allocate labor, materials, equipment, and overhead to specific cost codes.
  • Maintain and analyze Work-In-Progress (WIP) schedules to provide an accurate view of project profitability.
  • Review and approve project change orders and assess their financial impact.
  • Ensure accurate billing (e.g., progress billings, AIA billing) and efficient collections.

Financial Reporting & Analysis

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements following Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Produce budget-to-actual reports and report variances to leadership.
  • Monitor cash flow projections and oversee banking and treasury operations.
  • Aid executives and estimators with financial analysis for upcoming project bids.

Compliance & Internal Controls

  • Establish and monitor internal financial controls to prevent errors and mitigate fraud risks.
  • Ensure compliance with construction-specific requirements, including certified payroll, lien waivers, and retainage tracking.
  • Oversee corporate tax compliance and coordinate internal and external audits.
  • Manage commercial insurance audits, bond capacities, and pre-qualification financial submissions.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration. CPA, CMA, or CCIFP (Certified Construction Industry Financial Professional) preferred.
  • Experience: 5+ years of progressive financial management experience, specifically within the construction or real estate industry.
  • Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in construction ERP and accounting software (e.g., Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint Vista, Procore, or JD Edwards) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of percentage-of-completion accounting, contract types (e.g., T&M, Fixed Price, GMP), and heavy civil or commercial construction workflows.
